We’re looking for a skilled Capital Project Director to join us at Shakespeare’s Globe on a part-time (2 days a week), fixed-term basis until September 2029.
Right now, we’re entering a defining chapter in the Globe’s story. Over the next five years, we’re investing not only in our programmes and people, but in the very fabric of the building itself. The renewal of our iconic thatched roof is more than a capital project; it is a statement of belief in the next 30 years of the Globe’s life. Currently rooted in centuries-old craft and shaped by contemporary needs for safety, access, and resilience, this work reflects our confidence in the future and our responsibility to pass this extraordinary place on stronger than we found it.
Our new Capital Project Director will play a vital role in this next chapter. This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the most significant capital projects in the Globe’s history: the renewal of our iconic thatched roof and associated works that will safeguard the theatre’s future. You will guide a complex, high-profile project that brings together centuries-old craftsmanship, contemporary accessibility, and long-term resilience – shaping how this landmark serves artists, audiences, and communities for decades to come.
This is a funded role, all about driving accountability, quality, control and robust risk management, by directing and overseeing the design, cost, programme, and governance of the project as the client’s key lead and through an internal and external project team. You’ll be working with a tight-knit, experienced consultant team and a strong internal leadership and management framework. Alongside this, you will have the opportunity to establish the brief, tender and appointment of the major professionals supporting the project, including a construction project manager & contract administrator, QS, heritage architect, and other design consultants. In time, this will lead to procurement of a principal contractor, thatching contractor and any other subcontractors.
