Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant with a sports background to join our team at a college, providing essential support to students with special educational needs (SEN). This role is ideal for individuals passionate about education, sports, and supporting students in both academic and physical activities. The position involves providing assistance in the classroom, during sports activities, and also includes personal care responsibilities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Classroom Support
    • Assist students with special needs during classroom activities, helping them understand and engage with the learning material.
    • Implement and follow individualized education plans (IEPs) under the guidance of teaching staff.
    • Provide one-on-one or small group support to enhance students’ learning experiences.
    • Help with setting up learning materials and classroom resources as directed by the teacher.
    • Encourage and foster independence in students while also supporting where needed.
  2. Sports and Physical Activities
    • Use your sports background to assist in PE classes, sports training, and recreational activities.
    • Encourage and help students participate actively in physical activities, adapting exercises based on individual needs and abilities.
    • Promote teamwork and physical well-being among students, providing an inclusive environment for all.
  3. Personal Care
    • Assist students with personal care tasks, which may include dressing, feeding, toileting, and mobility.
    • Provide physical assistance where necessary, ensuring students’ comfort and dignity at all times.
  4. Behavior and Emotional Support
    • Help manage challenging behaviors using positive reinforcement and de-escalation techniques.
    • Provide emotional support to students, helping them build confidence, self-esteem, and a positive attitude toward learning.
    • Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment at all times.
  5. Administrative Duties
    • Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to teaching staff as required.
    • Help maintain accurate student records and contribute to report-writing.
  6. Team Collaboration
    • Work closely with teachers, special education staff, and other professionals to support students’ learning and development.
    • Attend and contribute to meetings regarding student progress and welfare as needed.

Requirements:

  1. Qualifications and Experience
    • Previous experience working as a Learning Support Assistant, preferably with SEN students.
    • A background in sports, such as coaching qualifications, sports science degree, or equivalent practical experience.
    • Experience providing personal care in an educational or care setting is highly desirable.
  2. Skills and Competencies
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
    • A compassionate, patient, and flexible approach to supporting students with diverse needs.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to manage challenging behavior in a calm and supportive manner.
  3. Physical Fitness
    • Physically fit, able to support students in physical activities, and provide assistance for mobility when necessary.
  4. Additional Requirements
    • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of students.
    • DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance, or willingness to undergo one.
