Morgan Hunt are working with a highly successful and diverse Further Education College to recruit a Head of Department – SEND

Department: SEND, Foundation Learning & Learning Support

Reports to: Director of Curriculum

Job Summary: Reporting directly to the Director of Curriculum, the Head of Department for SEND is responsible for managing and ensuring the quality of all curriculum provision for Foundation Learning, including programs for learners with SEND.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial and diagnostic assessments to plan effective support for English, Maths, and main programs.
  • Oversee the administration of courses, including admissions, induction, assessment, learner support, work-related experience, and discipline according to college policy.
  • Ensure efficient external and internal moderation and verification of exams and qualifications, including Supported Internship programs.
  • Work effectively with the Additional Learning Support Department, oversee learner consultations, and manage Annual Reviews for Foundation Learning.
  • Ensure that curriculum support aligns with learners’ Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCP).
  • Collaborate with external SEND professionals to provide necessary specialist support.
  • Work with local authorities to meet learner needs and plan future steps.
  • Establish forums with employers and parents to enhance the curriculum based on learner engagement and aspirations.
  • Ensure effective implementation of EHCP recommendations and communicate clear progression routes.
  • Lead and inspire a team of teaching and support staff to deliver outstanding teaching and learning.
  • Collaborate with curriculum and quality directors to improve teaching and learning standards.

General Responsibilities:

  • Act as a positive ambassador for the College.
  • Adhere to the College’s safeguarding policies, attending training as required.
  • Comply with all College policies, codes, procedures, and frameworks.
  • Engage in ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the College to support the achievement of College goals.
  • Promote and support equality and diversity.
  • Uphold the College’s health and safety policies, ensuring duty of care for oneself and others.
  • Address and challenge unacceptable behaviour in a manner that does not compromise personal safety.
  • Contribute actively to team meetings, one-on-one sessions with managers, and the appraisal process.
