We have a current opportunity for a Young Persons Mentor – Substance Misuse on a temporary basis. The position will be based in Wolverhampton. For further information about this position please apply.

Job Title: Young Persons Mentor – Substance Misuse

Location: Wolverhampton

Hours: Part time / 22.5 hours per week

Type: Temporary (6 month contract )

Hourly rate: ( £18 – £21 Umbrella )

Purpose of the Role

The Young Person’s Mentor will provide direct support to children and young people whose lives may be affected by a parent’s or guardian’s substance misuse. Working closely with schools and other professionals, the post holder will carry out assessments, deliver tailored one-to-one mentoring, and promote resilience, wellbeing, and positive life outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments with young people referred to the service, identifying strengths, needs, and risks.

  • Develop individual support/mentoring plans that address identified needs and encourage personal development.

  • Provide one-to-one mentoring in schools and community settings, supporting young people to build resilience, confidence, and coping strategies.

  • Offer a safe, non-judgemental space for young people to talk about their experiences and feelings.

  • Support young people in developing positive relationships, improving engagement in education, and setting achievable goals.

  • Work collaboratively with school staff, social care, health professionals, and families where appropriate.

  • Monitor and review progress, adapting support plans to ensure the best outcomes for each young person.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in line with safeguarding and data protection policies.

  • Identify and appropriately respond to safeguarding concerns, following organisational and statutory procedures.

  • Contribute to service development by providing feedback, attending team meetings, and participating in training.


Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience of working with children or young people in an educational, youth work, social care, or community setting.

  • Clear Enhanced DBS on update service.
  • Knowledge of the impact parental substance misuse can have on children and young people.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and positive relationships with young people.

  • Ability to conduct structured assessments and develop support/mentoring plans.

  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and ability to respond appropriately to concerns.

  • Good organisational skills, including record-keeping and time management.

  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualification in youth work, social care, education, counselling, or related field.

  • Experience of working in schools and liaising with multi-agency professionals.

  • Training in trauma-informed practice, resilience-building, or similar approaches.

  • Full driving licence and access to transport.


Additional Information

  • The role will involve travel between schools and community venues.

  • An enhanced DBS check will be required.

  • Training and ongoing supervision will be provided.
