Healthcare Assistant – Diabetes Care

Location: Chichester

Salary: Up to £15 per hour

Contract: Temporary

Hours: Full-time

About the Role

We are looking for a compassionate, reliable and motivated Healthcare Assistant specialising in diabetes care to join our healthcare team. You will provide high-quality, person-centred support to patients living with diabetes, helping them manage their condition and maintain their independence and wellbeing.

Working alongside nurses, healthcare professionals and other members of the care team, you will contribute to safe and effective diabetes care while treating every individual with dignity, respect and empathy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide personal and practical care to patients with diabetes.
  • Support patients with their day-to-day diabetes management in line with care plans and clinical guidance.
  • Monitor and record blood glucose levels as directed and report concerns or significant changes to the appropriate healthcare professional.
  • Recognise and promptly report signs of hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia and other potential complications.
  • Support patients with healthy eating, hydration and lifestyle choices in accordance with their care plans.
  • Assist with personal care, mobility and other activities of daily living where required.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records.
  • Work closely with nurses, doctors and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Follow infection prevention, safeguarding, health and safety and medication procedures.
  • Promote patient independence, dignity and choice at all times.
  • Provide reassurance and emotional support to patients and their families.

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant, Healthcare Support Worker or Care Assistant.
  • Experience supporting people with diabetes or long-term health conditions.
  • Good understanding of diabetes care and the importance of monitoring and reporting changes in a patient’s condition.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A caring, patient and empathetic approach.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Good record-keeping and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and professional standards.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in challenging situations.

Desirable: Relevant healthcare qualification such as an NVQ/QCF Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care, Healthcare Support or equivalent, together with relevant diabetes-care training.
