About the Role
We are looking for a compassionate, reliable, and skilled Communication Support Worker with experience in British Sign Language (BSL) to join our team.
The successful candidate will provide high-quality communication support to individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing, helping them communicate effectively, access services, participate in activities, and develop their independence and confidence.
You will work closely with individuals, families, colleagues, and other professionals to ensure communication needs are understood and appropriately supported.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide communication support using British Sign Language (BSL) and other appropriate communication methods.
- Support individuals to express their needs, choices, views, and preferences.
- Facilitate effective communication between service users and staff, professionals, families, and other people.
- Assist individuals in accessing education, healthcare, appointments, activities, and community services.
- Build positive, respectful, and trusting relationships with the people you support.
- Promote independence, dignity, inclusion, and equality at all times.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records in accordance with organisational policies.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure individuals receive consistent and person-centred support.
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality, and equality policies and procedures.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced in using British Sign Language (BSL) in a professional or support environment.
- An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
- Patient, empathetic, and respectful of individual communication preferences.
- Able to work confidently with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
- Committed to promoting independence, choice, dignity, and inclusion.
- Reliable, organised, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, and professional boundaries.
- Flexible and willing to adapt communication approaches to meet individual needs.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Recognised BSL qualification or certification.
- Previous experience working as a Communication Support Worker, Support Worker, Interpreter, Deaf Support Worker, or in a similar role.
- Experience working within health and social care, education, community services, or a related setting.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and awareness of the barriers faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
- Relevant care, health, education, or support qualifications.
