Pay Rate: £13.00 – £15.00 per hour (dependent on experience)
We are currently recruiting on behalf of a well-established Further Education College in Manchester for a resilient and compassionate SEMH & Behaviour Teaching Assistant to join their dedicated SEMH department from September 2026.
This is an excellent full-time, long-term opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviour, helping them overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.
As an SEMH & Behaviour Teaching Assistant, you will work alongside tutors and teachers, pastoral staff, and the wider support team to provide tailored support to learners with complex behavioural and emotional needs. You will help create a safe, structured, and positive learning environment where students feel supported to engage with their education.
You will support learners with a range of additional needs, including:
Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
ADHD
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Challenging behaviour
Emotional regulation difficulties
Trauma-informed and attachment-related needs
Your responsibilities will include:
Providing 1:1 and small group support within the classroom and across the college
Building positive, trusting relationships with students to encourage engagement and attendance
Supporting learners to regulate their emotions and manage behaviour positively
Implementing behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques where appropriate
Encouraging confidence, resilience, independence, and social development
Working closely with tutors, pastoral teams, and external professionals to support individual learning plans
Promoting a calm, inclusive, and safe learning environment
Monitoring student progress and contributing to support plans and reviews
Experience supporting young people or adults with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, or additional learning needs within an education, care, youth work, or support setting
A calm, patient, and resilient approach when managing challenging situations
Strong communication and relationship-building skills
Confidence using positive behaviour management and de-escalation techniques
A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable learners to succeed
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults
Relevant qualifications are desirable but not essential
Competitive pay of £13.00 – £15.00 per hour, depending on experience
Full-time hours with a long-term placement from September 2026
